In September 2011, Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School opened its doors at 509 Bramhall Avenue, beginning its life in what has been, for the past 100 years, St. Patrick’s Grammar School. During a century of service, St. Patrick’s provided an outstanding, values-based education to the children of Jersey City’s Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood.
For the past several decades, St. Patrick and Assumption All Saints Parish continued its educational mission by keeping open the parish school through the generosity of benefactors and the commitment of dedicated religious, particularly the Sisters of Charity. The transition to Edwards Academic, though painful, will continue our educational goals within a more sustainable financial model.
St. Patrick and Assumption All Saints Parish will continue to advocate for the educational needs of the children of Bergen-Lafayette. The parish will also explore opportunities to provide financial support to the fledgling school. In May 2012, the parish sponsored a golf outing for the benefit of Edwards Academic, an event that for many years was held to support St. Patrick School. The parish will look for additional opportunities to support Edwards Academic in the coming months.
